Carlos Edriel Yulo is the undisputed king of Men’s Gymnastics as he copped five golds and two silvers in Hanoi in the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Yulo defended his title in the SEA Games all-around artistic men’s gymnastics after an outstanding performance (85.150) in the six apparatuses at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace in Hanoi, Vietnam, May 13, 2022.
Yulo fell short on a double gold in the all-around as the Philippines settled for silver against the host country.
The 22-year-old olympian upstaged seven other elite gymnasts, including his compatriot John Ivan Cruz in the floor exercise, with a score of 15.200
On May 15, after falling in the sixth-place in the pommel horse event, the phenom came up big in the still rings events as the last competitor in the eight-man race with a solid routine and a vital landing. Yulo overshadowed Vietnam’s duo of Nguyen Van Khanh Phong and Le Thanh Tung.
Yulo medalled in all three events. He competed on the last day of the discipline at Quan Ngua Sports Palace on May 16, delivering the Philippines to its best finish in recent years with a 7-5-1 tally.
“If it’s up to me, I wanted to win all the medals in all the events,” the 22-year-old said in Filipino. He topped the top honor in the men’s vault with 14.800 points.
“I thought I lost the gold,” said Yulo after taking the gold in the high bar with 13.867 points, tying Vietnam’s Ding Phuong Thanh. According to the organizing committee, they got a gold medal each.
“There were two golds (in the high bar event), the difficulty of Caloy’s performance was much greater and the landing (the Vietnamese). We should have scored higher,” said Cynthia Carreon, the Gymnastic Association of the Philippines president.
Yulo (14.900) took silver in the Parallel Bars, losing to Thanh (15.333)
Expected to win at least four events in Vietnam, Yulo almost tripled his golds from the 2019 SEA games, where he ended up with two golds and five silvers.
Overall — Carlos Yulo bagged seven medals out of the eight events he participated in the men’s artistic gymnastics.
