Journalism throughout the years: Before & During the Pandemic

Journalism in the digital age is dynamic. However, a journalist's responsibility remains to deliver fair, impactful, and compelling news content. Such duties became even more difficult in the context of the global pandemic.

Over the years, the journalistic profession has undergone a dramatic shift and the job now reached new extremes with the presence of the internet as the biggest medium used worldwide.

Let's take a closer look at those significant changes as further discussed by the erudite journalists and promising professors in Adamson University, Mr. Argyll Cyrus Geducos and Mr. Glenn Ace Parungao at the zoom event entitled Political Reporting & Mobile Journalism: Media In Response to the New Work Set-Up held by the Communication Department last October 9 via Zoom.

The distrust in media has been uptight due to a lot of fake news circling around different platforms. Being the first source to break out an important story, journalists face unimaginable pressure which leads to rushed reporting and damages the entire publication once there's a mistake done.

During pre-pandemic years, a large number of reporters gather in a certain event to cover. But now, it limits down the physical interaction into a few people allowed following strict and mandatory health protocols.

Of course, there also exists new ways of conducting interviews such as online screenings. It adds up to the factors of complication upon extracting answers from the interviewees. Thus making in depth reporting almost impossible to achieve.

This pressing problem [pandemic] of the country also caused most productions to lack manpower and some are even forced to be their own full news crew. They carry their own equipment, do the interview, transcribe and even edit and produce the whole shoot all by themselves.

While this unprecedented event has brought many changes, the physical, emotional and mental health of the journalists are not spared from it. As much as the world suffers from the virtual set-up, it is twice as hard for them to jump into a completely new lifestyle in order to survive in the industry.

Speaking from personal experiences, Mr. Geducos and Mr. Parungao maintain a balance between their work and personal life. Together with other professionals, they never let emotions get ahead of themselves.

After all, they are meant to serve, to uphold facts and to resist injustices becoming the instruments of truth in today's time. In the midst of the continuous challenges, it is indeed both passion and necessity for them to stay true to their duty. Nevertheless, these occurring changes in journalism are all part of the country’s economic and cultural growth.
