3 TV Series That Will Get You Thinking

In the words of Michael L. Tan’s Inquirer column, TV nowadays has reversed into the meaning of its 1950’s term “idiot box” which basically means that shows these days mainly accomplish the public’s need for mindless, brain-rotting viewing.

And while this may be true for some cases, here at Komunikator, we think otherwise. Here are some Feature department-approved TV series to get your brain juices flowing and, well, not make you look like an idiot.

1. Nine Perfect Strangers (Amazon Prime) (2021)

Mystery, Drama, Thriller

Based on a New York Times best-selling book, Nine Perfect Strangers chronicles the 10-day journey of extremely stressed strangers throughout their stay at a health and wellness center that promises to change their life for the better.

Jam-packed with cult-y vibes and a dose of “healthy” drugs here and there, Nine Perfect Strangers boasts of hit stars from Melissa McCarthy to legendary actress Nicole Kidman with her spotty wig and Russian accent (it’s ok, we’ll let it slide). Bonus points for The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto being part of the ensemble!

Great for a weekend full-day type of viewing that will make you get in touch with the internal struggles of people around you.

Trigger warning: Suicide, sex, substance use

2. Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) (2021)

Mystery, Comedy

Starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and our childhood idol Selena Gomez, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ follows the story of three neighbors who get to know each other over their love for true crime podcasts.

The story revolves around the characters as they investigate a death in their building and a discovered murder that ties around it while starting their own podcast in the process. The series is comical and thrilling in all the right places with its fast pace and great storytelling.

Just a disclaimer, this is an ongoing series, so it’ll be great as a show to watch out for every week and probably up until next year as it just got renewed for a 2nd season (yay!).

Trigger warning: Suicide

3. The OA (Netflix) (2019)

Mystery, Drama, Sci-Fi

Following the story of a former blind woman and her journey that crosses multiple dimensions, ‘The OA’ is a show that will definitely make you go: “Whuuut?”.

With its compelling storytelling and tons of weirdness here and there, ‘The OA’ will make you fall in love with its characters and leave you with curious questions which will throw you down a Reddit rabbit hole searching for answers. Unfortunately, these answers will not be officially answered because of their cancellation despite protests from superfans.

Still, it’s a great watch for when you want to focus on a story without plot holes.

Trigger warning: Death, abduction
