Miss Granny: An Unexpected Gem

The first time I heard the movie “Miss Granny” was the time when I looked for a Korean film, but did not pursue watching it because of its plot.

Many of my friends posted on Twitter how good the film was and that among the countries who made Miss Granny, the version of Sarah Geronimo stood out the most. I was shocked when I discovered that five Asian countries actually made a remake of the film, it is truly a hit in Asia.

The trailer gave it all, Miss Granny is a film about an old woman who finds herself suddenly young again.

Fely Malabano, played by Sarah Geronimo, is a boorish old woman who’s about to be sent to a retirement home.

When she heard the decision of her son, she was heart broken, so she decided to run away from home. She came across a photo studio that had a photo of Audrey Hepburn, which caught her attention, the owner promised to make her 20 years younger, and so the movie progresses.

I can proudly say that it is very entertaining to watch, but I can’t deny the fact that something is missing. It seems like they get the good parts out of the original film and remake it. The first part seems like fragments pieced forcibly and the end looked rushed.

RANDOMNESS

Miss Granny is simply better in parts, since it looks like a compilation of different good scenes. The earlier part was the lighter and funnier side of the film, wherein Audrey(Fely) is exploring her newfound youth.

Toward the end of the film, it became emotional, then out of nowhere, Sarah Geronimo engaged in slapstick comedy that can make anyone burst into laughter, which had been a huge blow to the minds of the viewers.

Sensational

Sarah Geronimo shone like a diamond throughout the film as she made an impact everytime she was on screen. Her presence in a comedy film may not be as memorable as her musical performances, but her undeniable charm and quirkiness made it possible for her to stand out throughout the film. Her singing prowess that can be heard in almost every part of the film will make you fall for her over and over again. For me the other characters like James Reid and Xian Lim wasn’t able to showcase their talent with their limited appearance especially Xian Lim who’s character was useless.

Unforgettable

What makes Miss Granny a masterpiece is not just about the cast, Sarah Geronimo’s singing ability nor the emotions poured out by every characters, but also the script or the lines used which will make you realize that crying has never been this beautiful. The lines they executed were truly superb-- it will make you feel the characters’ dilemma. The song choice was amazing like it was made specifically for the film. The on screen advertising that they did was annoying, since they weren’t even subtle with their product placement.

It is not just about the story of love, family, youth, and dreams, instead, it is a film that could change the way you see the world in a different perspective.

My rating: 8/10
