La La Love for Musicals: A Generation of Fun Broadway

It is with no doubt that this generation absolutely loves entertainment, whether it be in the form of a song, dance, or acting. Before the pandemic, movies with complicated plot twists and puppy love for their theme definitely caught the hearts of youngsters who enjoy beautiful yet perplexed fiction.

Once the unexpected lockdown hit the country and everyone was in isolation, numerous composers took the stand and made musicals accessible for everyone - yes, I’m talking about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Youtube channel, The Show Must Go On! that is still posting snippets and soundtracks from his musicals. Apart from that specific platform, other websites also stream them for free.

With that, here are some of the broadway musicals that will surely have your mind visited by the earworm.

Kinky Boots

A musical popularly known for music written by pop star Cyndi Lauper tells a story about a man who inherited a failing shoe factory from his father and then later forms an unlikely partnership with a drag queen who has an interesting taste in upgrading the shoemaker’s designs. Made with the traditional sound of broadway, Kinky Boots also has dance numbers and upbeat songs that fit the charisma of the main character named Lola, who is gay and likes to be the center of attention.

The Phantom of the Opera

It has become the main reaction that if one has not seen this musical yet, you have been living under a rock and that you’re missing half of your life. The Phantom of the Opera tells a story of a love triangle between Christine and her love interests - Raoul and Eric, the Phantom. Hence the word opera in its title, POTO offers an operatic type of performance and iconic booming organ along with its musical accompaniment. Fun fact, when the 2012 production performed in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, rumor has it that maintenance has reported a crack in the ceiling after their visit.

Hamilton

Not a fan of opera or traditional broadway? Well, this is still a musical but with a hip-hop theme. As composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the real-life story of one of the founding fathers and first secretary of the treasury of America, Alexander Hamilton, whom Miranda believes to have embodied hip hop as well. The writer is quite well-known for creating songs both for theater and film with a fast tempo, namely tick, tick... BOOM!, In the Heights, Moana, and Encanto. Let us all agree that history might be a little more fun to dive into with a little role-playing and music involved.

Chicago

Fan of murder mysteries? Chicago relives the jazz age in the 1920s, where the female convicted crime was entertainment. The story tells of a young married woman who dreams of becoming a star. Unhappy with her marriage, she got involved with another man she believed would help her reach her goal. She, later on, kills him and gains fame after facing a criminal charge for murder. This musical is known to be the number one longest-running show on Broadway and even has a movie starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere.

While there are many musicals to choose from, who knows? Maybe Broadway is your next obsession! There is undoubtedly more about live performances other than those that are pre-recorded. Just don’t let Lola start to get all kinky, have Phantom live inside your mind, let history have its eyes on you, and be hooked with all that jazz!
