Homegrown singers of Adamson University took the spotlight as they showcased their talent during the Falcon Pitch event online, on May 7 via Facebook Live.
With the theme “BIDA Next Winner,” the organization aimed to give Adamsonian artists a platform to present their self-produced songs despite conducting it online for the second time.
There were five contestants who joined this year's contest namely Bren Miguel Carolino, with his entry "Let It Flow"; JC Rallos with "Down East"; Eliza Jane Maturan with "Akala Ko Lang Pala"; Erik "Rikee" Estrada with "Yakap Ka"; and Jim Abenido, performed by Yrawl Gedoria, with "Nothing is Fine".
Among the five contestants, Bren Miguel Carolino won 1st place; Jim Abenido and Yrawl Gedoria in 2nd place; JC Rallos in 3rd place; Eliza Jane Maturan in 4th place; and Erik “Rikee” Estrada in 5th place.
According to Carolino, he was proud of being the back-to-back champion of the competition and that he was grateful for the people who appreciated his works.
“It feels fulfilling to win back-to-back. It's an honor to compose a song and know that other people dig it. Natutuwa din ako nung sinabi ninyong last year pa kayo na-LSS sa mga kanta ko,” He said.
(I also felt happy when you said that my song left an impact to the listeners.)
To write a good composition, Carolino said that you must enjoy the process and make sure to perfect it.
“Para sa akin ang pinaka importante ay nag-eenjoy kang sumulat at perpektuhin ang sinulat mo na kanta. Iba kasi yung record lang. Pag gusto mo talagang tangkilikin ng mga tao, kailangan mo tutukan yung sound in performing, recording, and mixing,” Carolino stated.
(For me, the most crucial part is that you enjoy writing and that you’re taking the time to perfect the song you wrote. It’s different if you just record it. If you really want people to enjoy your music, you have to focus on the sound while performing, recording, and mixing)
Moreover, Eliza Jane Maturan, a first-time contender of Falcon Pitch, shared that she had a good experience with the competition despite not winning the first-place.
“Maganda ang experience ko. Lalo na nung una kong nalaman na may ganitong contest pala, sinend lang kasi sakin ng classmate ko yung post eh. Thankful ako na nakasali ako. Kahit di nanalo, maganda yung experience,” She said.
Maturan also mentioned that she would also join next year’s Falcon Pitch as it served as a platform for small artists like her.
“Magandang contest ito sa mga small artists like me na ma showcase ang talent lalo na dito sa school natin. Aside sa exposure, magandang experience din para makakuha ng learnings,” She stated.
(This is a good contest for small artists like me because I get to showcase my talent, especially here in our school. Aside from exposure, this is also an excellent experience to gain new learnings.)
Meanwhile, Jenica Villanueva, Falcon Radio’s head of radio operations, shared that the event was successful as it achieved its goal of showcasing the songs composed by the university’s students.
“The main goal is to establish a platform where rising Adamsonian artists can have their song heard and discovered by other people. I believe that Falcon Pitch has always successfully fulfilled this goal as we feature these artists and their songs to serve as their avenue in releasing their well-crafted masterpieces to the public,” she said.
She added that thanks to the students, more performances were presented this year and that the media partnerships helped increase the engagements.
“There are more performances featured this year, and we had media partners, which I believe helped propel the social media presence not only of the Falcon Pitch series but of Falcon Radio as a whole,” Villanueva stated.
Music Program Head Rochelle Pascual shared that the team experienced some challenges before and during the event proper despite the event's success.
“The event preparation was not a one-person job, and we had difficulties finding judges. Towards the end of our program, we also got an issue wherein some of our content was plagiarized due to its musical background,” she said.
This occurrence served as a lesson for the committee to take extra precautions for future online events to come, according to Villanueva.
“Technical difficulties are also part of doing online events, and with two years doing Falcon Pitch online, it still remains to be an aspect we have to take extra consideration of as we experienced another error this year during the live event due to copyright claims. This, however, as it should be, has been charged to experience,” She said.
