One of the most common things we hear in the month of October is the term “Oktoberfest.” Some may not know it, but this annual celebration originates from Munich, Germany, and is considered the world’s largest beer fest.
Of course, Filipinos will always make their way into the spotlight. With our own touch, it has become one of the most anticipated events in the last quarter of each year, combining our love for beer and music.
Here are some of the ideal songs we recommend to blast on your speakers and sing along to with your friends this Octo-beer:
Beer - Itchyworms
For the past 25 years, iconic songs from Itchyworms have persisted despite new and refreshing music from emerging artists. One of Filipinos’ favorites is Beer, released in 2005 from their second studio album, Noontime Show.
As stated in an interview by OG Channel about the story behind Beer, Itchyworms mentioned that one of their bandmates’ fathers, specifically Jazz Nicholas’, advised that they should create a song with a melody that the public can easily sing along to.
Upon holding on to this advice, there is no doubt that Beer has become one of the go-to songs during birthdays, karaoke sesh with friends, and other special occasions. With these, you cannot deny that this is one of the perfect songs to feel the Octo-beer atmosphere.
Laklak - Teeth
One of the well-known rock songs from the 90s is Laklak, a debut single from Teeth. It is the first song that the band has recorded and composed, which is an admirable feat since not everyone experiences the spotlight immediately after their first release.
In an interview by Rico Blanco with the band’s drummer, Mike Dizon, he stated that he wrote the lyrics for Laklak in one sitting and based it on his drinking experience as a teenager. He even confirmed that those lyrics were true to life, including the iconic “Kabilin-bilinan ng lola, 'wag nang uminom ng serbesa.”
With a catchy melody and easy-to-remember lyrics, Laklak has indeed imprinted itself in our culture—a perfect song to lose yourselves in.
Huling Sayaw - Kamikazee feat. Kyla
From Kamikazee’s album Romantico released in 2012, Huling Sayaw captured the hearts of many. It is understandable, given that it features Kyla’s stunning voice and has this refreshing vibe that makes it a perfect jamming song.
Perhaps, you have heard of this song since it is frequently played during Battle of the Band competitions and gigs: an undoubtedly crowd’s pick as it is best enjoyed when screamed out loud all together.
Huling Sayaw is about savoring each moment with your loved one. With its melody and addictive tune, anyone would probably pick this song to scream at the top of their lungs, regardless of their relationship status.
Hanggang Kailan (Umuwi Ka Na Baby) - Orange & Lemons
After those loud and energy-filled tunes, you might want to chill for a while. If that’s the case, then Hanggang Kailan is a song you will probably hear, especially when there is a guitar on site.
Even without speakers, if you have a guitar with you, the song’s repetitive and straightforward chords make it an easy go-to jam song for groups. A perfect pick to play while you’re out with your friends. It doesn’t matter if you are in a cozy living room or under the stars because it just makes any drink the perfect one.
Although, be wary since its heartbreaking lyrics might make one of your friends cry while you are all in the middle of singing along.
Your Song - Parokya ni Edgar
This two-minute and forty-eight-second long song might even feel shorter than it is because of its gentle and soothing vibe. It has been almost two decades since this song was released, yet the power that this song holds is relentless.
Due to its popularity, Parokya ni Edgar decided to include it in their live album, Inuman Sessions Vol. 2, released in 2012, along with their other hit songs, such as Mang Jose and Bagsakan. This move earned the song even more attention since their Inuman Sessions performance had gained millions of views.
The song has already surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify, which is a first for the band. Indeed, they deserve it because we will probably not get tired of singing along and screaming “my one and only you” every time this song plays.
The perfect playlist paired with the perfect circle can surely make any drink the best one!
Just a friendly reminder though that underage drinking is a no-no!
Raise your glass, drink responsibly, and enjoy each moment. Here’s a toast to our Octo-beer affairs!
