Honoring the legacy of DFA Ambassador Bernardita Catalla after battling COVID-19

Philippine Ambassador to Beirut, Lebanon, Bernardita “Bernie” L. Catalla who died at 62 after battling COVID-19 was honored for her service.

The passing of the envoy was a great shock to everyone. Tears and sympathy from various officials from different countries such as Lebanon and the Philippines. People praised and remembered her for what she contributed to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and the Philippines.

Ms. Catalla was passionate while serving the country, as proven by her record. She worked for 27 years as ambassador in Beirut, Lebanon, a former Consul General in Hong Kong, and a former passport director. She also served the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Jakarta, Indonesia.

She led the amendment of contracts of foreign domestic helpers to include a ban on dangerous window cleaning. She spearheaded the repatriation of OFWs in Lebanon because of the economic crisis, which began last December. She used to donate to UNICEF to send five to six children to school but it was stopped to provide education for her niece and nephew. She is truly a simple and down-to-earth person.

According to her niece Jessie Catalla who is currently studying Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Adamson University, the late envoy was very close and interactive with OFWs. One great thing about her was her big heart for the Filipino community. She was very compassionate and she cared for the welfare of her people.

According to Jessie, Ambassador Catalla was someone to look up to. Despite her success, she was still devoted to serving the mass. Ambassador Catalla was more than just a name but a mother, not only for her nieces and nephews, but also for those who are in need.

“Yung generosity niya as colleague, family, and friend hahangaan mo talaga,” she said.

(Her generosity as a colleague, family, and friend is something to look up to.)

Her legacy remains because she helped our fellow OFWs to be strong, have hope and be courageous.

Ms. Bernie Catalla was not just someone the people should emulate. In her mission to provide assistance in welfare, she earned eternal adoration. Her dedication contributed to a holistic development for security and assistance for those who conquer their fate overseas. Her bequest becomes a pillar of our faith in leadership and love for our country.
