Fourth Year Communication students conducted a seminar entitled "Bridging the Gap: Connecting the Multicultural Society Through Media Communication" to raise awareness regarding Intercultural Barriers between the society and media, last April 12, at the Ozanam (OZ) AVR.
The seminar aims to encourage students to accept their cultural differences and have a better understanding in embracing diversity in relation to the subject, Intercultural Communication.
Senior Communication students, then gave a brief background about the issues like language barriers, cultural differences and ethnocentrism relating to Intercultural Communication followed by the Program Administrator, Ms. Mira Ticlao, with her opening remarks.
Ms. Ticlao highlighted that Bridging the Gap centralized on “[k]nowing your audience and communicating the messages effectively to different platforms”.
The first speaker, Mr. Noel Escondo, the head of Multimedia of EON Group, discussed the effective ways and practices on how to engage with the audience.
"Knowing your audience is different from engaging them," he advised.
He emphasized that grasping different techniques, like identifying your platform, defining your audience, creating content, strategizing and sharing, will get the audience to actually listen to the speaker.
The second speaker, Ms. Satti Ombao, a multitalented film and television professional, tackled advertising and focused on its significance in the industry.
“You cannot get into advertising if you do not have these words to ponder: A-ttitude, D-edication, V-alence, E-mpathy, R-adical, T-ruth, S-imple, I-nspire, N-oise, G-ravity,” she said.
Ombao then reminded the students to remain humble all the time.
“Hindi kayo pinagaral ng magulang niyo para magyabang” (Your parents did not send you to school just so you can show off).
The last and third speaker, Mr. Jethro Adriano, a creative consultant and motivational speaker, discussed how an adman is a visionary.
According to him, we need to “[r]emind ourselves everyday of that vision until it eventually becomes real.”
After the talk, the sponsors of this event namely, Trampoline Park, Coca-cola, Accenture, Monde, Intechaust, Milktealicious Café, Bake n Bites, especially Wittycup and Feature PH, gave away free t-shirts and tumblers to the winners of the raffle.
The event was formally ended by the Chairperson of the Communication Department, Ma'am Ailene Ayson as she congratulated all the people who participated in this event.
