COMMUnity rakes several awards in PODCON 7

Selected students from the College of Education and Liberal Arts – Communication Department proved their skills and talents in the recently concluded Podcast Convention 7 held at the University of Santo Tomas on March 25-26, 2019.

With this year’s theme being “The Influence of Mass Media during Elections”, PodCon 7 is set to hone the mindsets of these future media practitioners on how to become responsible and efficient in radio broadcasting and podcasting.

Meanwhile, awards were given in different categories which are Best in Radio Drama, Best in Radio Documentary, and Best in Radio Disk Jockeying.

Our soon-to-be media practitioners have aced one major award which was under Best in Radio Documentary. The team of Mary Grace Navalta, Iana Charmaine Moran, Shyra Anne Felias, Christian Joseph Dagohoy, John Pelayo, and Bryan Marasigan received the award of Third Place with their winning piece entitled as “Mass Media on Duterte’s Win”. Meanwhile, Second Place award was given to Bulacan State University’s “Linya” which also bagged the “Fan Favorite Award”, and lastly, the champions for this category was from Miriam College with their entry, “Botante”.

Accolades under Best Radio Drama category were given to; “Presstitusyon” by Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) for Third Place, “Almusal” by University of Santo Thomas (UST) for second place, and for the First Place was bagged by Bulacan State University (Sagap). Meanwhile, Fan Favorite Award under this category was given to PUP’s “Mass-kara”.

On the other hand, winners under radio disk jockeying were; 2nd runner-up for girl’s category, Andrea Nicole “DJ NIkki” Lopez from Animo Central-B (DLSU-M), 2nd runner-up for boy’s category was awarded to Vincent “DJ Shaq” Repalpa from On Fire in 5 Minutes (PUP-M). The champions under girl’s category were awarded to Marguerita Bianca “DJ Gari” Rivera and Yula Beatriz “DJ Nikki” Ferma from Musika Pinoy (Miriam College) while the award in boy’s category was given to Andrei “DJ Drie” Gaspar from Animo Central-B (DLSU-M).

Falcons have also clawed up special awards during the On The Spot Radio Drama competition, Third Place were Mary Grace Navalta, Iana Charmane Moran, Carl Topher Aguilar, Charmaine Navoa, John Michael Medina, Bea Arzadon, and Hanss Rufon who have presented their radio drama with the topic of “Martial Law”. Second Place award was given to Jerome Astrera and Michael Salvador with their topic OF “Lack of Education”, the champion’s team’s comprised of selected students from BSU and UST with their winning piece “Poverty”.

Individual awards were also given to Mary Grace Navalta for having the Best Social Media Post, Most Active Participant to Michael Salvador and Most Participative University to the school per se.

The two-day convention was spearheaded by four reputable speakers from different fields of mass media. First half of the convention was initially started by a veteran journalist, Mr. Cesar Chavez, who is also the Senate reporter, news director, news and public affairs anchor, a general manager and Assistant Vice President for News and Public Affairs at the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC). He specifically discussed the role of radio broadcasting during the campaign period, election day, and after elections. Chavez also gave emphasis on the importance of educating the masses on who they should vote for.

Second speaker was Lawyer Rudolph Steve E. Jullarbal, who serves as Vice President of Legal, Corporate Secretary, and one of the Directors in MBC. “The currency of a good journalist is his credibility,” as he shared. Jullarbal’s talk focused on the ethics of broadcast journalism which is crucial for every broadcast journalists.

The latter part of the convention was preceded by a multi-talented broadcaster, and Media Education Specialist in Voice, Mr. Bernard F. Canaberal. With his talk titled as “The Art of Storytelling on Radio”, Canaberal emphasized the qualities of a human voice and how it gives tremendous impact to someone especially in the context of radio industry.

The last topic tackled was citizen journalism which was explained by the head of ABS-CBN’s Bayan Mo, I-Patrol Mo (BMPM), Ms. Rowena Paraan. The said program aims to encourage citizen involvement primarily the students in increasing not only the public awareness on election issues, but also influences everyone to promote responsible journalism.
