Inside the Mind of a 20-year-old Esports Student-Athlete

As Worlds 2021 (League of Legends World Championship) arrives and we see the peak of competitive League of Legends draws near, a competitive LoL esports just happened last month at the National Campus Open Season 3 by AcadArena. Our very own Adamson University Guild of Animation Makers and Esports - AdU GAME participated at NCO S3.

I had a talk with the teams’ AD Carry, Jaren Luke Sebastian also known by his in-game name “Jars”. Jars is a 20 years old 2nd-year college student studying Bachelors of Science in Hospitality Management. He’s been playing LoL for seven years now and slowly reaching his dreams step by step.

One day, he saw that there was a big tournament in another country for League of Legends that had a large prize pool. He has strived to become better at playing competitively ever since.

When asked how hard it was to be a student-athlete, the 20-year-old said that it wasn’t hard for him. “Because you can still play competitively while maintaining your good grades in school because you just need to manage your time properly and know your priorities as well like doing your homework first before playing”, Jars said.

The recent NCO S3 was fun for the AD carry as they defeated a lot of powerful schools before falling to the Kings of Luzon the De la Salle University.“I think it's a good experience for me and for my team also, so that next time we meet them in AcadArena we can defeat them in the next tournament”, as mentioned by Jars.

Esports has been flourishing in our country and that means many opportunities for any other potential gamers to become student-athletes out there.

For every student out there who’s looking to be a student-athlete in the esports scene, Jars left a message for you.

“Just trust the process, just play and play to improve but don’t forget your priorities in life. It's okay to lose in a game but also when you lose you should learn from your mistakes and take that as an opportunity to improve next time. Losing is a part of the game so just play and play and never let your fear decide your future.” - Jaren Luke Sebastian
